Roslyn Mannon, MD, has been named Director of Research for the Alabama Transplant Center. She will also be a Professor in the UAB Division of Nephrology. Dr. Mannon earned her bachelor's degree from Johns Hopkins University and her medical degree from Duke University. Her research involves identifying new mechanisms of graft injury in transplants. She wants to set up a biorepository to collect biopsy tissue and other medical data from abdominal transplant patients so investigators can better study issues such as transplant rejection and graft failure. She would like the repository to expand to include heart and lung transplants as well. Additionally, she hopes to recruit biotechnology companies that work on transplants and transplant-related drugs to Birmingham.
Edgar Jaimes, MD, Associate Professor, Division of Nephrology, is a physician scientist who completed medical school training and residency in Columbia, South America and moved to the United States in 1994. He completed his internal medicine residency and nephrology fellowship training at the University of Minnesota Medical School in 2000 and was appointed to the rank of Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Minnesota in 2000. He moved to the University of Miami in 2001 and was promoted to his current rank of Associate Professor of Medicine in 2004. Dr. Jaimes will have a 7/8ths VA appointment at the Birmingham VA Medical Center.
Hasan Khamash, MD, Assistant Professor, Division of Nephrology received his medical degree from the University of Jordan in Amman and completed internship, internal medicine residency and Nephrology fellowship at State University of New York, Stony Brook, Nassau University Medical Center. He continued to receive Transplant Nephrology training at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He served as Assistant Professor of Medicine at Kirksville School of Osteopathic Medicine as well as a private practice in Northeast Missouri. Dr. Khamash is board certified in Internal Medicine and Nephrology with added certification in hypertension and nutrition.
Dana Rizk, MD, Assistant Professor, Division of Nephrology received her medical degree from the American University of Beirut and completed internship and residency at the American University of Beirut and St. Louis University Hospital. She served as Chief Resident and completed her nephrology fellowship at Emory University Hospital during which time she focused her attention and research effort on Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease. She served as Assistant Professor of Medicine at Emory University School of Medicine and the Atlanta VA Medical Center. Dr. Rizk is board certified in Internal Medicine and Nephrology.
Sandra Malakauskas, MD, PhD, is a physician- scientist who will be joining the Division of Nephrology as an Assistant Professor of Medicine. She obtained a PhD from California Institute of Technology and completed her MD from UCSF. She was recruited into the ABIM research pathway at Duke University where she completed her internal medicine residency and nephrology fellowship.
